Statement - Dr. Rod Jacobs - Part of Epworth General Surgery & Gastroenterology Clinical Institute.

I was recently lucky to be one of the first surgeons in Australia to use this innovative idea from Germany. One of the issues in successful ventral hernia repair is being able to approximate the anterior abdominal wall muscles back together in the midline without undue tension. Traditionally this has been achieved in a variety of ways, pre-operatively using botulinum toxin to relax the lateral muscles or blowing the abdomen up with air to stretch them and intraoperatively raising muscle flaps to mobilise them towards the midline. Sometimes all three are necessary. Each has a cost and potential downside. Additionally, occasionally during surgery one finds that it is not possible to close the defect, either because these preoperative adjuncts haven’t been employed or haven’t been effective, and the morbidity of raising the muscle flaps is not thought warranted. The Fasciotens hernia employs continuous traction on the lateral muscles to elongate them over a 30-minute period to enable the defect to be closed. I found it easy to set up and use, effective and did not alter my operative approach, except insofar as facilitating a simpler operation and avoiding more extensive surgery. I believe it also contributed to less post operative pain. The patient had an uneventful recovery. I am encouraged to use it again when indicated. - Dr. Rod Jacobs.

We look forward to more successful cases scheduled in QLD and SA in the coming weeks.

The innovative fasciotens products use a patented tissue-sparing technique to apply vertical traction to the fascia of the abdominal wall, creating the conditions for direct abdominal wall closure in open abdomens, complex hernias, as well as neonatal abdominal wall defects.
